April-May 2004 wrap-up:
Mike Fetchel (mfetchCT425) of Middlefield, CT went on a tear during April and May, winning four tournaments (to go with his earlier one) and qualifying in six more to open up a 150 IRP lead in the 2004 Internet Championship race. Scott Buhrow (MrB_IA218) of Louisville, KY continues to lead the rest of the pack.

Double elimination:
April and May saw the ACC’s first Internet double elimination tournaments. These events can accommodate 96 players, divided into three mini-tournaments each with its own 32-player bracket. Donald E. Ellis (+_LoneStar__), one of our most experienced Internet TDs, directs these tournaments, which place extraordinary demands on the online host.

Double elimination events took place on alternate Thursdays during April, and switched to alternate Mondays in May. Entry is limited to the first 96 players, and in order to keep the proceedings to a reasonable duration, the field will be broken into 32-player brackets which will comprise their own mini-tournament (click here to see a graphic representation of the bracket in a separate window).

Double elimination events started April 8 with Rick Allen (_29xtwo) of Richmond, VA, Dorothy Westerlund (ACC1139L2) of Sherwood, OR and Mark Van Dyke (loosespokes1135) of Grand Haven, MI each winning their brackets for 30 IRPs each. Jim Crawford (JNC_CA04328), Dick Ness (drness) and Larry Reed (drcrib_3) were the Second Place finishers, tallying 18 IRPs apiece. The maximum 96 players participated in this inaugural event. Note that this was Van Dyke's third ACC Internet Cribbage victory, Mark having previously earned the distinction of being the first ever to have won two such events.

April 22 saw Tim Kunst (drpeppermn927) of Duluth, MN, Betty Stewart (betty_boopster4) of Roseburg OR, and the ubiquitous Mike Fetchel each win their double elimination bracket.

On May 10 it was Bryan Bordenik (Cribtek) of Orting, WA, John Mullen (johnmu500) of Bangor, ME and Mel Ashley (mellifluous1) of Marina, CA topping their brackets, and earning their first ACC Internet victory in the process.

Finally, on May 24, the winners were Mike Rosenstock (SirPegger) of St. Cary, IL and a couple of groundbreaking Canadians: Cecily S. Ryan (En_Chanted1) of St. John's, NL and Donald Olney (olney_1147) of Carievale, SA. As we've noted before, Ryan is member number NL1, while Olney is member SA3, a great demonstration of the expanded reach the ACC has brought to sanctioned cribbage through its Internet events. We believe Ryan and Olney are the first members from their respective provinces to win any kind of sanctioned ACC event in its nearly 25 year history.

Another pattern is evident with this winners lists. Yes, all sixteen brackets in each of the four double elimination events was won by an ACC member. The double elimination format heightens skill differences (since it takes more than a single run of bad cards to knock you out), so it's not surprising that ACC members, who represent the world's strongest players, are thriving in them.

Check out a double elimination tournament if you haven't done so already. Come early to make sure you get a seat in a full bracket, and please allow a little extra time since you could play in as many as eleven rounds if you win. See you there!

More April highlights:
Counting the double elimination events, April saw fifteen different ACC Internet Cribbage tournaments, and for the second consecutive month, ACC members won every one of them! Mike Fetchel led the way with three victories, as well as a Second Place finish on April 1. He also became the first member to win two consecutive ACC Internet tournaments, notching back-to-back events on the 10th and 12th. Scott Buhrow added a win to his two previous triumphs to stay in Second Place, while Kelly Ann Burgar and Tom Lewis battled it out for Third. April also saw Gerald Oxford's (+_TheOx_1) debut as an accredited ACC Internet Tournament Director. Gerry is a veteran of Pegging Pals, and has been handling our Saturday afternoon single elimination events the past several weeks. He hails from Crescent City, CA, and often participates in ACC tournaments as a player, using his non-Plus nickname jerryox.

More May highlights:
Saturday, May 1 saw ACC members' winning streak stopped at 26 consecutive tournaments as a nonmember came out on top. Cecily S. Ryan continued her IRP-earning ways, though, finishing Second, while Dale C. White (WA1835) tied for Third. John Schafer got the membership back on May 3, though, starting another streak of 14 consecutive tournaments won by ACC'ers. Here is the full list of ACC members winning Pegging Pals single elimination events in May:

James Harrison had a 29 hand in the First Round of the May 17 tournament. Alas, there's no monetary prize for this in Internet play (unlike the Tournament Trail), but it's still a thrill to convert this 1-in-216,580 shot.

Two months are left in the 2004 season, and there's still plenty of competition for the All-Internet team. Remember, the top 10% of rated Internet players will qualify for the 2005 ACC Tournament of Champions in Reno. Join us!
