August 2005 wrap-up:
No sooner had we wrapped up our 2004–5 Internet cribbage season, which
saw Michigan peggers Mark Van Dyke and John Schafer taking
the top two spots, did we finish the first month of the 2005–6 season
with...Michigan peggers Mark Van Dyke and John Schafer
taking the top two spots. Someone call the conspiracy theorists!
Schafer, who hails from Battle Creek, breakfast cereal capitol of the
world, got the ball rolling with a victory in the August 4 Pegging Pals
single elimination event, minded — as is
usually the case on Thursday nights — by
Annie Poppe. Van Dyke scored with the first Cribbage Cup on August 9,
then topped the 73-player single elimination event on the 25th. It came
down to the Finals of the August 30 Cribbage Cup, directed by Karen
Peake, but Van Dyke prevailed in the best-of-three match, thus making it
11 consecutive months atop the ACC Internet Cribbage seasonal rankings.
Not to be overlooked is Schafer's own streak of eight consecutive months
in the top three. Can anyone stop these two?
Some old faces...
It's nice to see Mike Fetchel
(mfetchCT425) of Middlefield, CT and John R. Anderson (_HIGHPOINT_)
of Madison, WI on the winners board once again. Fetchel was the
2004 Internet Champion and the winner of
the ACC's first rated Internet tournament.
Anderson is no slouch himself, finishing 18th in
2004–5 and earning an invite to the ACC
Tournament of Champions. Jim Hatch (NHpegger) from Salem,
NH has been with the ACC for several years, and played in several
Internet events last year,
winning one
of them. He notched his second tournament victory by taking the
79-player August 29 event, edging out our old friend Tom Lewis (pegfast)
in the Finals. And then there's Al Jean Simpson, with her
Gershwin-informed nickname of LdyBgood. Simpson, who hails from
El Cajon, CA (do pronounce that the correct Spanish way!) has been a
supporter of ACC Internet Cribbage from the get go, and we're happy that
she notched her second lifetime tournament victory on August 6.
...and some new ones
Meanwhile, August featured two first-time winners. David D. Braach
(papa349) comes to us from Missoula, MT, a city with an awfully
high caliber of cribbage player, having spawned the likes of Life
Master - Four Stars DeLynn Colvert and Life Masters Sharon
Hejtmanek and Rex Paddock. Mark Breneman (force5racing)
comes to us from the Brainerd, MN area. He reports that he "has a
business degree, is into numbers and loves cribbage".
